Insurance Coverage

If insurance companies can cover Viagra for men, it’s only fair that they be required to cover birth control for women. That's why Governor Blagojevich enacted legislation last year that requires all private insurance companies in Illinois to cover FDA-approved birth control devices and services. This new law requires private insurance to cover birth control pills, patches, implants, shots, IUDs, and diaphragms.

All FDA approved contraceptives must be covered by insurance companies that pay for other prescription drugs. However, not every prescription for birth control is reimbursed at the same rate by private insurance companies. We want to make sure you have every opportunity to save money. If you're not sure what your private insurance plan pays for, click here for a list of the most common contraceptives covered by providers. If you don’t have private insurance, we’re also working with large companies that insure themselves to convince them to cover birth control as well.

If your private insurance company is not covering your birth control prescription, call the Illinois Division of Insurance at 1-877-527-9431 or fill out the online complaint form.
